Woody Creek, Colorado. Population 263 per 2010 census. Not exactly a bustling metropolitan area. :)
I meant large cities. Think NYC, Chicago, Baltimore. Places where the majority of wildlife consists of feral cats and rats.

Woody Creek IS in the Roaring Fork Valley and not far from Aspen therefore smack dab in mountain lion territory.
Fenced yards mean nothing to hunting cougars. Anything that can climb a tree or rocks to pounce on large prey wouldn’t consider a fenced yard any type of challenge at all.

Tip of the hat to mom for saving her son. She must have gone all Mama Grizzly on that cat.
The maternal instinct kicks in and all bets are off.
