The police used GedMatch to catch that serial killer in CA. They got a hit on a relative, and then employed the services of a “Forensic Genealogist” to narrow it down to him. I read that GedMatch currently has enough DNA samples to identify about half the people in the country. This gives the police a suspect. All they have to do then is wait for him to discard something with his DNA on it.
So, it’s good to catch serial killers. But it’s the other uses that I worry about. Sperm donation and adoptions are areas that are already experiencing ramifications. Time will tell how this works out. I don’t think it’s going to be good.
Well, I’m not a serial murderer. Nor am I donating Sperm. Adoptions may need to have ramifications, though there should be restrictions on what you can do with it, which of course you wouldn’t have with our overzealous judicial system.
It was interesting how they got the Golden State Killer. I think it was via his daughter’s DNA.
