The boys were not public figures when they were slandered. That removes a lot of First Amendment protection from the Press.
There was a clear malice in many of the posts and articles.
There was an incredible lack of due diligence.
These lawsuits will have legs.

No I’ve not forgotten punitive damages. But you can’t get punitive damages if you don’t have actual damages. If your damages have been mitigated to a small amount ( and yes, I do anticipate that anyone who takes the opportunity to apologize will also be coughing up some cash), then there’s no hook left to hang punitive damages on.
My, my, what a coincidence—a lot of those names named belong to libtard “reporters”, who live to write nasty slanderous stories about conservatives-—even when there is no story. It’s just a shame that most of those names will have the court penalties paid by some corporate entity and not out of their own pocket. And the unbelievable bishops and school personnel who so readily turned on their own before they even got any of the actual facts straight should be fired, or sent to serve in outer Mongolia. Shame on them!
What's my point? The left was okay with "guilty until proven innocent" in those cases. Now we have cases where the people named are guilty, with plenty of proof. I suspect the lads will get at least enough money for free college educations, grad school, tuition, room/board where ever they attend school.

Here's hoping that the lawyer is smart enough to privately inquire among the admission execs at the Top 100 US universities as to whether their views of these Covington Catholic boys are jaundiced now -- there's your freaking damages. That's a million or two per person.

Thank you there, Chief Justice. I’ll put my 28 years as a member of the bar, and hundreds of civil lawsuits, in the drawer where they belong. We wouldn’t want to consult the law or experience in analyzing the case.
