I'm not sure about building a tower out of wood. A small base relative to the height is going to put a lot of stress on the wood supports that cement or steel would handle much better. The Minneapolis building wasn't that tall relative to its broad base so I wouldn't see any inherent weakness in that structure. The new engineered wood beams are quite strong and would likely be reliable as long as you don't get ridiculous. It would seem that the natural flex of wood would be advantageous in earthquake zones.
