I think of it as a giant blender where you’re making malt and there’s always a moment where a gob of vanilla ice cream slides around the blender in the milk for a while making a huge racket before finally being pulled into the blades and smoothed out....
There’s probably a big wildly irregular glob or globs of molten material down there somewhere that moves but not as fast as the more liquid stuff and no blades to smooth it all into one even consistency.
That’s as sciencey as I want to get tonight.

Both of you imho are correct. (In a layman’s way of speaking). The actual source of the magnetic field isn’t a mystery - just why their model is so far off.
The problem isn’t with the earth - it is with their model. Obviously many things on earth are cyclical. Some can me “modeled” very precisely - like the sunrise, beginning of spring, and when Haley’s comet will appear.
Other cyclical things aren’t so easy to predict - such as climate change and the magnetic pole wandering.
