I love listening to the Radio Broadcasts from that era, in particular H.V. Kaltenborn’s commentary on events.

You may enjoy newsreels from the other side: Die Deutsche Wochenschau. There are dozens on YouTube, many with English subtitles. The ones from 1939 are full of optimism, showing happy soldiers, civilians celebrating great victories. The coverage of D-Day and after is also interesting. “Our brave lads are strategically moving to more defensible positions...look at these gum-chewing American prisoners.” By late 1944 the programs still sound optimistic, but the astute German viewer will notice a lot of what is not being said—very like our mainstream press.

My favorite line is Goebbels saying something along the line that “taking German cities will be a lot harder than taking Paris, Rome or Bucharest”—which of course used to be under Nazi control, but weren’t any more.

Oh, I also get a kick out of the Lord Haw Haw broadcasts as well. The funniest of all are the songs by “Charlie and His Orchestra”....here’s a classic one...
