Tattoos are graffiti?
It is the Priest's job to point out that suicide is a grievous sin. This may be upsetting to some of the Celebrate Life folks, but it is true, nonetheless.
“Suicide is not a factor.”
Sure, it is. It’s a rejection of Christ.
“Tattoos are graffiti? “
Bumper stickers for the MeeToo! crowd.
It may not be pleasant for those who have to grieve, but they would grieve at his funeral if he had died suddenly from other causes and, by your measure, suffer the same harm.
I’m not justifying suicide. I’m just saying the Bible is relatively silent on the matter.
Is suicide by someone mentally incompetent a grievous sin?
If not, how do you calibrate when mental illness is not sufficient for forgiveness? In such a gray area, the priests should confine their condemnations to regular church services and in a generalized manner. Trotting it out at a funeral assumes they knew the mental health of the individual. Otherwise, it’s insensitive, arrogant inconsideration.
Spot on. Really sad what happened, but true nonetheless. He probably could have said something to the effect that suicide is not the way to go and to seek help if one were considering that and let it go. Sounds like he was a bit harsh. A bigger question here is the parents' failure to teach the son that suicide was not the solution to anything. THEY should be criticized.
Agreed
That mother only gets a bit of slack. Maybe her grief made her forget
That is unless she thinks either there is no God or she is God
The whole funeral sounds bad. where was dad when that. oach needed clicking? why did the kid keep playing football for a coach who was an ass? Did the kid attend church regularly? or only for holidays and such?. Were was the dad thru all of this? BTW . did anyone else know maryland has a no fault divorce and you can be divorced in as little as 2 weeks . no minor children, a divorce agreement signed by both parties, and its uncontested. 2 weeks. !
No indication that thats what the family wanted
Compassion and sympathy were not evident in this priest
“The mother completely lost it and started shrieking A better place than with me?”
My mother was a full blown narcissist and this is exactly the kind of thing she did. The child was in a MUCH better place.
My first marriage ended in divorce in 1967. Texas did not have no-fault divorce, so the decree had nonsense of a sufficient gravity to please the scolds. It said that I would come home from work and sit on my wife’s stomach. LOL
I apologize, I should have been more clear on the scenario I was thinking about.
The person that commits suicide and leave behind the wreckage of, “See? You did this to me. My life was so horrible and you never understood me is why I did this.” leaves behind incredible destruction.
All the problems of the one that commits suicide are now solved but they are unfairly dumped on someone else.
Killed himself at a funeral ... that’s how I read it, too. Someone should mention to the editors that punctuation is your friend.
I should have added that this woman did not “loose it” it was all carefully rehearsed to shift the attention to herself.
This was a very ugly situation. The young man didn’t want his girlfriend or his high school football coach to attend the funeral either.
Apparently, the coach did show up and was asked to leave. The coach wrote and posted something the family didn’t like. Family went to school administration with allegations of abuse and bullying, coach fired by school.
Kid was a pretty decent football player, coach is old-school. No winners in this one.
the no fault divorce thing ..... I didnt mean it to sound like a geico commercial. My take was ,”wtf” does marriage mean nothing to most people? Its so cheap in maryland you can get married on saturday and file for divorce on monday and be single by the end of next week. its sick. Maryland is a deplorable freak state.
Commas would not help, unless accompanied by a change in syntax: the position of adverbs and adverbial phrases and clauses is extremely important.
The best version would be, “At funeral, priest criticizes teen who killed himself.”
