When you are in a knife fight and your opponent draws a gun, you must also draw a gun or die. When you are winning elections and the argument and your opponent finds “ballot harvesting” you must ballot harvest or lose. When you are fighting for the soul of America and you opponent employs Rules for Radicals you are FORCED to match their effort.
Every escalation must be met with an equal and opposing counter effort and does not reflect upon the respondent, but upon the instigator who took it to that level in the first place... desperate to win , and losing , so willing to tear it all down to stay in the game.

Not what I was taught. Every threat must be met with overwhelming force and the counter attack continued with overwhelming force until you have destroyed not only your opponents ability to continue the fight but also his will to continue or resume it.
If someone comes at you with a knife and you have a gun, you don't pull a knife and wait for them to escalate. You pull your gun and shoot them. No brandishing, no threats, no warning shots. You neutralize the threat as quickly and completely as possible.
