I read on a NASA website that in the most intense regions, the Van Allen belts deliver 1/4 rem per hour to a satellite that is protected by 1/8" plate aluminum. It takes about 100 rems exposure to make a person sick. So the radiation is not that intense. Easy to cross in a few hours.
But if you listen to the conspiracy theorists, it's like a microwave oven. Where are they getting their information if not from NASA?
Solar radiation is easily shielded against since it is charged. Cosmic rays not so easy. The only thing that blocks it is mass, and then only partially.

But if you listen to the conspiracy theorists, it's like a microwave oven. Where are they getting their information if not from NASA? Memes and flat earth videos. Seriously. Most don't even bother to fact check even the most ludicrous claims.
