Hi all, Long story short, I am looking for carving blanks or roughouts. I don't have time to do this stuff from scratch no more. my eyes are weak, my fingers are thin.. the old band saw aint been fired up in a long time and I might lose a finger...

Anyhow I am looking for a good source on carving roughouts or blanks, so I don't spend a ton of time on hogging out a hunk of wood on the band saw.

I recall a place in Trumbull Co Ohio called Beaver Dam Decoys, I was in their shop years ago, they had EVERYTHING.

Where did they go?

Mountain woodcarvers is good too

Help

Might want to take a look at Frank Miller Lumber, their front room section. Union, Ohio/Indiana, just north of Greenville, Ohio right on the Ohio Indiana border. I get 95 percent of my wood supplies there.

In the 70’s & 80’s I did some carving of gun stocks. The tools I used could be bought at Kmart or model airplane stores. I have not seen them in years.

Seems like traditional hobbies of years gone by have been replaced by electronic gadgetry.

I recall spending hours if not days on just one gun stock, getting the lines perfect. Getting the parts to fit perfectly. Then admiring the finished weapon, knowing the rifle stock was as good or better than a factory one.

I miss the simplicity of that era.

So you see Smokey Mountain Woodcarvers site is basically defunct now.

Beaver Dam Decoys too.

Jeeze guys, don’t make me do it the old way now LOL

If they have sugar pine, basswood, butternut, tupelo or walnut, I guess that is a start.

seems no one sells woodcarving stuff any more. ......................... Its a dying art. I use to go to the decoy show in Harve de Grace MD. It use to occupy 3 school buildings the 1st weekend in May. The last time I was there it was down to one building. The old timers are disappearing and today’s generation? Forgetaboutit.

Thanks to all that leave me a trail of wood chips to follow.

No time to carve now, but I will be back!

lessons learned.. the #3 fishtail gouge, a good bench knife, a good detail knife and a macaroni gouge is all you really need

And a strop loaded with Herbs Yellowstone.
