Michael did not try to off Pentangeli. It was Roth, makin it look like Michael.

The only Pentangeli part I like that relates here is his plea to Michael about the Rosatos “Look, let’s get ‘em all — let’s get ‘em all now, while we got the muscle.”

There are a lot of goofy suppositions from this guy, including that Danny Aiello ad-libbed the line and Coppola decided to keep it in the film. That's ridiculous. That's a major plot piece they wouldn't put in without a reason.

Also, he proposes that maybe the passing cop was in on the plot to make it LOOK like they were trying to kill Frankie and to set him against Michael. Also ridiculous.

The only thing in favor of your Hyman Roth theory is that yu say Roth admitted it to Michael later in the movie. He may have, and if so, then you win.

I don't remember that, though. Which is not to say it didn't happen.
