If the building is on fire you may be running for the red EXIT sign but the British person next to you certainly would not be doing that because of the color alone. He and the Chinese, the Australians, the Italians, the Germans, etc., would be looking for the color green and they would expect to see the pictogram of an open door with a person running out that door.
