The Romans killed Jesus. Crucifixion was the customary method of execution among Romans, not Jews. They also had a motive -- to silence someone who was known as "King of the Jews" during a time when they (the Romans) were brutally occupying the Holy Land, and the Jews were putting up resistance.

It wasn't the fact that the Jews killed Jesus (they didn't), it was the widely held belief that they did (due to mass brainwashing by the Catholic Church for many centuries) which lead to enormous anti-Jewish sentiment, with effects lasting to this day.

The anti-Semite is afraid “of himself, of his own consciousness, of his own liberty, of his instincts, of his responsibilities, of solitariness, of change, of society, and the world – of everything except the Jews.” He is “a coward who does not want to admit his cowardice to himself.”

Jean Paul Sartre
