Amen
Mandinas never fails
Ive never eaten at Tujages even though Ive been to New Orleans 2-5 times annually since 1963 but its very old school
It was my big city growing up in Jackson Miss
It and Big D
Mandinas....I go every visit....I love it....eggplant creole
I used to love Fitzgeralds on Ponchatrain....thanks hurricane Georges
When I was a lad on my first trips on weekends without my folks at age 15....imagine that ..lol
Wed stay 8 to a room at the Sonesta and breakfast after being out all night at the big Walgreens on Canal...a balcony second floor soda fountain with like fifty cent breakfast.....eggs toast and bacon and coffee...1972
PoBoys ....Parasol or Guys or Adams St Market
Dantes Kitchen closed unexpectedly....great brunch
I like Galatoires , Antoines, Commander's Place and Arnauds in that order old line establishments....Christians is long gone as is the Caribbean room I think
You can also drive our 10 about 25 miles elevated swamp interstate to Manchac for the best thin crispy Catfish at Middendorfs....I stop whenever I go up 55 instead of 59
Gumbo
Gumbo Shop is touristy but good
Dooky Chase....
Mandinas decent gumbo....
I prefer very dark Cajun style roux...Creole roux is a hair lighter and subtle
Which Cochon does well....the dark...Brigstens too and Mr Bs ...a Brennan..joint
And Napoleon House I love at night for the atmosphere....its old old old and dark... Brennan joint again...by Royal Orleans across from Cafe Maspero...not as cool
Royal Orleans balcony rooms and Audubon cottages if you are on no budget are as good as it gets cool rooms wise but $$$$
New Orleans has so much good food even touristy places in the CBD and Quarter and Marigny and out Magazine can be precious finds
I am a Felixs man....Acme is good but my mama loved Felixs
Their entire menu is quite good...the only thing Acme does better is air conditioning in the grill room and a Roast Beef debris Po boy
They are across the street from one another
My mom would drag me there when dad was meeting with. LL&OE and afterwards wed go to DH Holmes for the Napoleons in the downstairs bakery....best ever
Have fun....Im hungry now....gonna go eat that leftover French dip I saved from dinner.....
You had me at DH Holmes...
Holmes
Maison Blanche
Rubensteins
Godchauxs
Only a shell of Rubensteins remains
The Saks at Canal Place is a grade A level Saks though in fairness
Special night
Special place
Commanders Palace
Ask upstairs Garden room or the patio room
Although all their rooms are cool
Dress up
Years ago Lurker, we were told by those ‘in the know’ on French Quarter dining to skip Acme and go across and down the street to Felix’s. We did. We have not returned to Acme since.
Before the DH Holmes at metrocenter my mom wuold (drag) me on Saturdays to NO to shop. The food *almost* made up for missing Saturday morning cartoons. Almost. When you’re 8 or 9 though cartoons still win LOL.
I don’t think there’s a single gumbo house in SoCal.
Well, we ended up booking at Tableau.
I have to say, this was not easy. And Tableau was not our first choice. We ran into a lot of places that required jackets! Very surprised at that and normally wouldn’t be that big a deal but I don’t want to pack that sort of stuff on the plane and for all the kids to boot.
Many places (Brennans, etc.) were booked solid. Many have VERY small menus that we didn’t care for. Maybe they run lots of off menu specials, but we didn’t want to take that chance.
We were booked at Galatoires but cancelled because of the required jackets.
So...it’ll be Dickie Brennan’s Bourbon House before the Saints Game and then Tableau the next night! We’ll eat well.
Thanks to all for the tips and the advice.
