So why did the castaways from Gilligan’s Island always call them typhoons? Their island was somewhere in the general vicinity of Hawaii.

I would not look to Gilligan’s Island for the correct meteorological term for Central Pacific storms. Typhoons are the term for Western Pacific storms that hit Asia. Central Pac storms are labelled hurricanes, such as Cat 4 Hurricane Iniki that hit Kauai in 1992.
