Here is a link to a map of the entire Guantanamo Naval Base. It is much larger than just the detention area, and it includes a whole lot more than "water and mudflats". We have had Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, Air Force, and Army facilities there for many, many years. It is huge; not as big in area as Rosie Roads, PR, but it is huge.
I was privileged to spend a wonderful 30 days and nights of refresher training in and out of the bay back in early 1976.

The boundaries on that precisely match the boundaries of the tract that I examined on Google Earth and other OHI sources.
As I said, most of the area is water and mudflats (roughly 65%). Only the small coastal areas with paved roads are what I would consider suitable for building -- and I examined all of those for signs of recent construction.
BTW, I'm a USAF vet. If the USAF troops are billeted over by Leeward point Field, they got the short end of the housing stick! '-)

Just curious: about underneath the "Y" in "BAY", there are what I would call three "large, concrete mooring stations". Do you know the proper Naval nomenclature for such things? (I see another dozen or so of the "pairs" back in the bay...)
