I was watching the lookouts in Titanic crow’s nest and wondered “why didn’t they have binoculars? They could have spotted the iceberg in time to avoid collision.”

True fact: there were binoculars in the crow’s nest locker. But the key was in the pocket of an officer who was transferred shortly before Titanic set sail.

The key recently sold at auction for $100,000.

wow, a key that was not on the first / final voyage.

100k assigns the blame to the lack of a key by those who bid.

There's a theory, supported by testing, that because of the weather/water conditions, the iceberg was obscured by a "mirage" until it was too late.

Binocs may not have helped, given all the problems and things that went wrong at the wrong time.
