Since you've been reading the saga of Laurel Canyon, then you also know what McGowan had to say about Crosby's talent! (assuming you've gotten that far).
Apparently, he was the poster child for handlers in the background to make sure certain people were promoted despite their talent.

Yes, that Steven Stills was the only one with any talent at all and Crosby and Nash have been like remora eels on him for the past 35 years.
