The American Indians had no concept of “race.” When tribal numbers diminished through disease or war or natural causes, they just rounded up some more people to join them - often taking children from settlers. Read a fascinating book about this once.

Yes, that is true. The Commanches scalped and killed my great great grandmother in West Texas and the family felt very grateful that my 2 year-old eventual great grandmother was left alive and unharmed in her crib. Yes, it was common to take the young and raise them as Indians.
