It's a little of both. "Petard" is derived from a Middle French word for "fart," so the exploding device must have sounded rather like flatulence.
Etymology is fascinating. For instance, word "harass" takes on a new flavor when traced back to an Old French word for "to sic a dog on."
“CHOPPER! SIC BALLS!”
(Sorry...from one of my favorite movies “Stand by Me”...:)
Seriously, though, I agree. Etymology is really interesting to me as well.
I like stories like this because it allows me to say “Jeez I’m glad I’m not that stupid”.
“A Medieval knight re-enactor has impaled himself with his lance during a performance and died.”
Just because it’s not real to you, doesn’t mean the lance isn’t taking it seriously.
Rough way to go.
Medieval paper plates?
I agree it’s a sad freak accident. A number of years ago, IIRC also in Virginia, a reenactor was accidentally killed by a gun that wasn’t supposed to have live ammunition.
Lightning
Car racing has had numerous deaths, among them Dale Earnhardt.
Volume.
Weather has been cra-cra; a few nights low 30s....turned the heat on in the house; today 70-80s and the ac is on full blast.
I think the leaf peepers will be disappointed that the foliage is about done up here, if they come this far north.
Waiting to see snow on the summit soon. :)
There’s bear stew in your future. :)
Hold muh mead.
