Prior to 2004 Blue was for the incumbants (Gore 2000) and Red was for opposition... all of the red state blue state talk from that campaign solidified the colors... nothing else.
I don’t recall that scenario you’ve described. Are you coming to the “nothing else” conclusion based on that? I recall them just arbitrarily announcing the switch from blue to red without explanation.
