The new push...
Nothing new about that. A quick search...
After Bush v. Gore, Obama, Clinton wanted Electoral College scrapped 10/27/12 Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — Shortly after the 2000 election, as a newly-minted Senator-elect, Clinton called for direct elections of the president. She argued the country has changed since the Electoral College was put in place. There is nothing new about her desire to eliminate the EC.

And as far as illegal aliens voting...they have been doing that for some time. Ignoring it (not busting and prosecuting it) has merely emboldened and encouraged others who had not been voting before to do so more recently.

Noncitizens, Voting Violations and U.S. Elections

In addition, there is evidence that both foreign nationals who are lawfully present in the United States and illegal aliens have voted in recent elections. During this election cycle, noncitizens have been discovered on voter registration rolls in both Virginia and Pennsylvania. 2 And the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York recently announced that it charged a Canadian woman with making a false claim to citizenship after she registered and voted in more than 20 elections.3
Snip... The intentions behind the Real ID Act also continue to be thwarted by certain provisions of the NVRA. These provisions, known as the “Motor-Voter Law,” require state departments of motor vehicles to act as voter registration proxies. The information supplied by license applicants doubles as voter registration information and the registration process has become nearly automatic. Because so many states continue to issue driver’s licenses to noncitizens, it is relatively easy for aliens to commit voter fraud through the Motor-Voter system. When renewing a driver’s license by mail, they simply check the boxes indicating that they wish to be registered as voters and affirming that they are a U.S. citizen. Most often, they are added to the voter rolls without any attempt to verify the applicant’s citizenship. Nothing new here.

I’ve seen some speculation of late that leads to consideration that a number of the sealed filings (to include indictments) could well involve election fraud & the perfect time to drop would be right before the election to take those players out of the picture and leave the bad guys without their fraud machine or ability to reconstitute or any real complaints, “that’s unfair!”. In such a scenario, those kinds of things could be dropped before the election and then other things after the election i.e. 11/11. In furtherance of such possibilities, it occurred to me that one thing Sessions had been doing before ]SESSIONS[ was activated was piling up human trafficking things - so a lot of those have been revealed along the way. In any event, we’re going to need more popcorn!
