Elen, USMC, call this afternoon with good news and dumb news. The dumb news is that she has ordered a sword from a catalog, but she's not allowed to have a sword, so it will be shipped here. It's a replica medieval longsword, not a Marines (or Knights of Columbus) ceremonial sword. The good news is that she will start her MOS training on Tuesday. The alternative was a delay of several months. The training is nine weeks, so she will almost certainly be out of Twentynine Stumps before it gets drop-dead hot.

My daughter, deciding to go full on Scot, (which she isn't, because her mother was French-Canadian) decided to "collect swords." I don't know if she still has them but she kept them in a closet, and never did display them.

That being said, Elen, USMC, could have decided to order worse things. Greg, the neighbor in Espinoza collected arcane weapons, such as the "knife-glove" of Freddy Kruger fame, and cane swords.

This is a good time of year to be at 29 Creosote Bushes, because the heat, and the monsoons will still be a ways away by the time she graduates from that training. Good luck to her!

Maybe Elen’s thinking about involvement in SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) or some such hobby when she gets free time. One of my cousins was a member and his wedding was SCA-themed (and a blast!). Also, I have a couple of oriental broadswords that I used for double-broadsword groundfight training. (Good for coordination and you really rotoroute a few neural tunnels while you’re at it.)
