Good Morning, from rainy southern New Hampshire! All I wanted was another hours sleep, with three cats and a Border Collie curled up with me, when there was a noise out back. Got up and went to the kitchen. Trash can knocked over and sunflower seed can missing. Went outside to find the can and source of its missing status just off the deck. And adult black bear, north of 300 lbs, chowing down. Took pictures that didnt turn out well and then chased him off! But not before he/she ate about $12 of black oil sunflower seeds.
We are on high bear alert here too.
Got to eat all that good grub to get ready for the long winters nap.
Was the sunflower seed can outside or did bear do a breaking and entering?
They do that here.
Wow = a bear? Please be careful around that critter.
I had one smash bird feeder against the window like it was a pinata, and then proceeded to eat the entire contents. I hear it is a high-calorie snack for them, so probably the same with your sunflower seeds!
300 pounds is a big one! I imagine he will be back since they are creatures of habit. I tried all sorts of things, and the old wives tale about ammonia doesn’t work at all! I had a bear step in cups of it Knocking them over on his way up our deck. Didn’t phase him a bit.
One amazing thing, we had one tear open a snowmobile seat because there was an empty package of potato chips stored underneath it. The next winter, something came back and did the exact same thing although the potato chip bag was gone. Remarkable memories and sense of smell!
So I hope you have better luck keeping him away!
