How bout this.
They are trying to "bait" Trump into firing [RR] BEFORE the DECLAS material comes out so they can raise hell. They must know [RR] is toast and this is a pre-emptive cutting loose of [RR] who they got to cut loose anyway. So why not use the cutting loose to some advantage. Its all they got left, regarding firewall [RR]
