When RFID gets cheap enough to tag every individual item, this will be the only way it’s done. Cashiers will be as obsolete as elevator operators.

I was in a large fancy office building in Downtown Chicago last week. The public passenger elevators are state of the art. Quick, gentle, and efficient.

Then I met with the Building Engineer to confirm some infrastructure stuff in the basement. We used the non public elevators the building staff uses. When the doors opened I almost fell over.

Yep. Elevator Operator in uniform, just like back in the day.

Guess what...it’s a Union job.

we cannot have straws or drive our suv anywhere we want or set our thermostat to whatever temp we can afford but we can throw away millions of RFID tagged packaging?

I was surprised when clerk-less stores started that they were using cameras. I thought RFID would be the way they would go.
