I don’t think Phil was cheating on his wife, Brynn Omdahl. (sic?) But she was envious of her husband’s success (such as it was) and wanted to enjoy a similar career. Sadly, she had mental health issues and an on-again-off-again problem with drugs she couldn’t shake thanks in part to the circle of friends they had. I think she was Phil’s third wife.
One night they had an argument and he went off to bed to end it. Hours later she shot him with a gun they used for home protection and hours after that, with police on the premises and she locked in their bedroom, she shot herself.
...I sometimes thought Phil and Jan Hooks had a thing going because they were such a great team on SNL. But apparently not—she was seeing Kevin Nealon for awhile—according to a book about Phil that I read. (Entitled _Miss Me?_ Great read!) Jan had some problems of her own as she developed a progressively worse form of stage fright—which Phil would bring her out of as their time to perform their skits neared.

Going to look for that book. I loved Phil Hartman.
I’m sorry, the book is called “You Might Remember Me” and I think the author was Mike Todd(?) The cover has a pose of Phil with himself looking over his shoulder. You’re gonna like it!

Yes! I found it! I figured the name was slightly different. I was a big fan. He sure couldn’t pick women, I guess.

The book will explain it all. I was left with the impression that he could have pretty much any woman he wanted. But, yeah, his picks were his doom.
Don’t know much about Jan. (Not many do.) Only she was active till about 2000. Supposedly, the 9-11 attacks encouraged her to leave NYC for Woodstock, NY. A two-season stint on Designing Women (which I didn’t see—didn’t know she did it) and a recurring role on Third Rock from the Sun (which I saw a few times by pure chance) was her last big working period. Was increasingly withdrawn after that.
Mike Thomas details her final days (she died of throat cancer in 2014) in an online article somewhere.
I barely remember him. To me, he was just an older kid.
