Always helps to place these articles in a geographic context.

According to what I read about this period, this was a century after the Crusade to Christianize the pagan Prussians, led by the Teutonic Knights. Within the next century, this area would be included in the Hanseatic League, the dominant maritime power of the era's Baltic Sea.

"The skeleton of a man who died almost 700 years ago during the destruction of one of the oldest cities in Warmia was discovered in the basement of a building burnt down in the 14th century. Due to the conditions in the ruins, the remains were preserved in very good condition. "
- Ashes = the source of lye
- lye = high pH (alkaline) soil
- Alkaline soil = good bone preservation...

That is a very well-preserved skeleton -- with an apparently-crushed skull....
