Does it surprise you that he was in the Army?
Maybe he wanted to go against the flow a little and pick his own branch of service. I’m sure there was a lot of pressure to go Navy, as the last 3 generations had done.
As noted, he did serve in the UCMC.
My guess is that he is now in a US Army reserve unit?
The photos show four Overseas bars (right) and other photos also show four Service stripes (3 yr Army, 4 yr USMC).
Curious.
Here is ‘going against the flow’ for military service from my own family:
My father served in the US Army Air Force in WWII; his cousin enlisted in the Navy in 1939 and made it his career for 24 years.
I enlisted in the Army and made it my career; my cousin (son of the career sailor mentioned) enlisted in the Marine Corps and served for 10+ years.
Thus we covered all 4 services (no one in my family has been in the Coast Guard)
“”Does it surprise you that he was in the Army?””
Everything written about him says he was in the USMC...So why the Army uniform at the funeral services?
Sen John McCain’s uncle served in the army and is buried at Arlington national cemetery.
