There is a term in philosophy for that. “Epistemological Crisis.” Philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre has a nice essay on the subject. Everyone has a view of how the world works, or should work, and it helps them navigate events. When something discordant with that view occurs, it casts doubt on everything they believe, and become extremely fearful of doing anything until they resolve the crises.
MacIntyre uses the example of Hamlet as one who properly resolves a crisis, meaning his new world view explains the discordant event and why his previous worldview was unable to explain the event. Hamlet uses rationality instead of emotion to determine a result.
An example of one who resolves poorly is Emma. Her answer was handed to her by the authoritative man in her life, and she pushed the “I believe” button without realizing why her original worldview was wrong. This seems to be where the lemmings of the Left usually end up.
Thanks!
