McCain dying NOW, and the replacement appointee, will give the new appointee a very slight edge in seniority over whoever is selected as Jeff Flake’s replacement in the November election.
At this point, there is no real certainty that Flake’s successor will be a Republican. Things are very much in a state of flux.

Could be that Gov Ducey might wait until after Tuesday’s primary and appoint Kelly Ward if she doesn’t win the primary race. I don’t think he’d appoint Sheriff Joe Arpaio....

Unless the governor appoints someone entirely temporary. For example, he appoints Cindy on the condition that she doesn’t run, or he appoints former Sen. Kyl to fill until an election can be held.
One theory is wait until Wednesday and appoint the second-place finisher in the Ward-McSally race.
