August 27. First news came over the Atlantic cable yesterday. Peace with China. Another dispatch followed. This looks like a successful reality.
The city is utterly dismal. I’m thinking of a course of lager-beer saloons and low theatres.
The periodical alarm about yellow fever is setting in. It seems to have got some foothold at Staten Island, round about the Quarantine. There has been a fatal case at 16 Greenwich Street and another at Hoboken.
