I like your ideas. I have watched The Americans - love that program - having grown up then and seeing events through the lens of the cold war, knowing what we know now. Interestingly though, and perhaps pertinent, that show was based on a case that was discovered in 2010, which included Anna Chapman, the hot spy.
The "Russian spy" aesthetic standards do seem to be lower these days. IIRC, there was something said about her being a honeytrap for a female official.... I wonder who that could have been?
I read recently that it was based on Chapman, and was surprised. It is so good at recreating the atmoshere of the 80s, and accurately depicting the events, it seems like it could be a real story from the 80s. There were a few unrealistic events towards the end (Soviet diplomat assassinated in DC during talks, that would have been a major crisis) but all in all, as a person who studied US-Soviet relations and then worked in Congress on foreign affairs during the 80s, it was very true to life and brought back lots of memories. Those were very exciting times. I imagine there were spies there who were doing similar things then, even if not based on an actual person.
PS: The splitting up of the FBI is not my idea, but I support it. I believe it is part of The Plan. CIA, too, will be broken up and any parts we need will be folded over into the NSA, DHS, DOJ and military intelligence. They are more dangerous than even the FBI. These events, I believe, are what will happen after The Storm.
