Me too. I must have lived in a bubble. I had a rude awakening when I attended Southern Illinois University the fall of 1970. The place was filled with hippies. It took awhile for me to figure out that what was being passed around at the campus concerts was not "cigarettes". LOL
I had to keep my eye out for the Black Panthers, who would form a line and knock students off the sidewalk. The place was not safe. I got out SIU as fast as I could.
The university was in the process of rebuilding Old Main, which rioters burned down in 1968. Apparently the case is still being investigated.
Protests, unrest reached SIU in the 60s
I visited SIU shortly after the new Main Building opened. Thugs had already sliced the (tax-payer financed) leather chairs with pocket knives.
I wonder how many of the rioters landed Chicago government jobs or are now Community Organizers?
