Fence feud: McDowell County neighbors argue over wall of tires
WLOS ^ | July 26, 2018 | Stephanie Santostasi

A war over a wall of tires. That's what's happening in one McDowell County neighborhood.

Jennifer Guyer and her parents have lived there for more than six years.

They love where they live, but lately, Guyer says, it's not as enjoyable as it once was.

"We were asked to put up a fence," she said. "Chain link fences are really expensive. We can't afford the expense of a chain link fence to go all the way down through there."

So, Guyer came up with an idea. She decided to create a tire fence. "It's not a dump yard. This is not trash. This is actually a work of art," she said.

Her neighbor Karen McKinney doesn't see it that way.

"I consider it a spite fence. They did it for a nuisance in the community, to make our area look ugly because we have to drive by, and they wanted us to have to look at it," McKinney said.

I’m sure someone was more than happy to give her those tires free to save themselves the ~$240/ton cost of disposing of them to the tire recycling yard. LOL!

According to another article this fence is due to a property dispute and survey. It doesn’t look like the city told them to install it.

Water gets in the tires and breeds mosquitos.

Only a trashy family would think anything like that is ok.

It will probably cost more for them to remove it that for them to have put up a chain link fence plus tire disposal fee is $1.50-$2 per tire.

Turns out is illegal

According to McCowell County’s solid waste disposal ordinance, under Section 8, Line D, it reads, “the disposal of tires on public or private owned property is prohibited unless it is a facility approved by state and local laws.”

Thanks!

Look like revenge-fence, then, to me. They say they can’t afford one and it’s only a suggestion at that.

Some stakes and string would be fine to mark if they really wanted to go on the cheap. Foot wide run of gravel a bit fancier.

Those tires look cut so they won’t hold water for skeeters. If the tires were cut or drilled for the fence so they drained then meh, it’s tire fence I guess.

A tire fence that’s not too bad for a corral:

There have got to be better looking alternatives than old dirty tires to make a fence. Just plant some Oleander.
If you’re really determined, try Blackberry Bushes. But be careful, Blackberry bushes tend to take over the entire area, and the limbs are covered in sharp thorns.
Thistle worked for the Scots, centuries ago.

I’d say remove it also. If nothing else it’s public health hazard. Mosquito farm on steroids

We had, past tense, a fence out front until the local deer ran through it.
Turned it to kibble.
I hate deer.

Aaaaaaand, this story is far from over. They’ve been given 30 days (from time article was written ) to get rid of the tires. “Tire Art” lady says she’s gonna replace the tires with more “art”. Please keep us updated on this squabble as it involves 2 vindictive, southern females. Oh yea, this could get goooood !
