Yes, it wasn't obvious to me at the time but knowing what we know now, McCain had no intention of winning.

The entire construct about why McCain chose Palin as his running mate is suspect, given what is now known about how McCain and his campaign staff felt about her.

The old neocon trick of leading the populists around by the nose...going nowhere while the establishment on both sides line their pockets.
