Since ascending to the throne in 1952, the monarch has seen 13 prime ministers serve Britain and lived through another 13 US presidents. She's now 92. At some point not for many years yet, we hope Queen Elizabeth II's reign will come to an end.
But what happens then?
For at least 12 days between her passing, the funeral and beyond Britain will grind to a halt. The stock markets and banks are likely to close.
But to focus on the financial disruption doesn't begin to describe the sheer magnitude of the queen's death. It will be an event unlike anything Britain has seen since the end of World War II.
Most British people have never known life without the queen. It will be a strange, uncertain time.
The British Empire once covered a quarter of the Earth's landmass, and for a brief, surreal period it is likely to feel as if the empire still exists, as all its former subjects will turn toward Britain for the news.
It will probably be the best-attended funeral of all time. World leaders from across the globe will flock to attend.
There will be hundreds of changes up and down the country in the weeks and months after the queen's death.
New currency will be printed and minted immediately. British currency bears images of the monarch, and the portraits of Charles will already have been made in preparation.
The British national anthem will change."God Save The Queen" will get some new lyrics or some old ones, rather. It will become "God Save The King."
Likewise, a great deal of military insignia will require updating.
And plenty more will need to change.

I hope youve seen the miniseries The Crown. If not, I highly recommend it. Very well done. Two seasons are out and the first won many awards. I expect the second one will, as well. I think its on Netflix.

Save the Weasel from Pop Goes The King.
You never get a day off. Youre always on. Imagine a life where anytime you leave your house everyone is observing you. Always. You really think that would be easy?
Poor baby
The Old Girl is the richest woman in the world and never workd a day for. Please, spare me.
If you think the Brits were benign rulers, then you are illiterate.
There is a reason MOST of the world hates them.
Do a little research. She was a mechanic in WWII. And she is far from the richest woman in the world. Your lack of knowledge is showing.
$515 million is chump change compared to the richest woman in the world. And she was a mechanic, not a medic. You clearly dont have a clue
WTF is it with you and the Queen anyway?
Charles will immediately call for the mass immigration of all muslims and surrender England to them.***********
He is an honorary Muslim as I understand it. He will do exactly as stated above and everyone will say, “Gee whiz, I sure didn’t see that coming!”
Whoever disbelieves Charles won’t do that has another think coming. He is the ultimate mole.
I don’t understand the hoopla over the Queen, now. She could live to be a 100, and keep her mind, and be Queen. She could outlive Charles, whose led quite the scandalous life w Camilla... interesting how quickly people are ready to see someone dead and buried! lol
A listing of real estate owned by the crown totals way more than 515 million.
I open threads like these mainly to see the reactions.
She and her family should have had their heads off decades ago before they destroyed England. Too bad more people couldn’t follow our example and get out from under their rule hundreds of years ago.
Yes, always interesting to see red-blooded otherwise patriotic Americans defend the queen and her inbred family.
Of all things to post on Independence Day!
I look across the diversity of beliefs expressed, especially the idea that some people are so uninterested in a thread about the British monarch that they will open it and post in it.
I myself am skeptical that a (small-r) republican Britain would be markedly better than other republics of western Europe, like France or Germany. I don't believe that monarchies are somehow better than republics, just that there are lots of mediocre ways to run a country.
I've also noticed that (small-r) republicanism in the U.K. seems to be more leftist, although obviously republicanism doesn't have to be. (In other words, if I betted, I'd bet that if we ever find a "British Republic," it will more likely to be a left-leaning "democratic" state with a Big Government than something like the earliest United States.)
I read that to my English-born mom. We both laughed.
