While there is a splash of ethnic diversity on virtually every team playing in soccer's 2018 Russia World Cup, many cite the Swiss national team for setting the standard for being multicultural.
Known affectionally by its fans in Switzerland as "the Nati," 14 of the 23 members of the Swiss team were either born outside of Switzerland or are "secondos" -- a word used by the Swiss to denote the offspring of immigrants.
Switzerland is not the only team that came to the World Cup in Russia with a sizable portion of players from the country's migrant or ethnic minority communities.
More than three-quarters of France's team (18 players) are from the country's varied communities of immigrants, while the Belgians have 11 such players, England 10, and Germany six.
But despite having millions of immigrants -- mostly from Central Asian countries Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan but large numbers also from Ukraine and Moldova -- the team representing World Cup host Russia is overwhelmingly made up of ethnic Russians and a few titular nationalities, such as Ossetians, from the country's vast array of ethnic groups.

Trump government funds Obama government’s propaganda machine.
Hmm, maybe that’s because the Russians picked their soccer team based purely on oh, I don’t know ... soccer ability? Diversity is great - right up to the point it hurts the mission. Diversity should not be the goal in and of itself - job performance should drive team makeup. You know what you get then? The best team possible without any considerations (positive or negative) for someone based on other demographics. That’s fair, not only to the people competing to get on the team - but also the other team-mates. You’re selecting the best possible people to work with them rather than handicap them with someone other than the best possible candidate.
Radio Free Europe has joined the side of the enemy.
They need to be defunded ASAP.
(Hint: Russia is not the enemy. Those who want to censor Americans are the enemy.)
I’m sure an article about racial disparity in the NBA is forthcoming.
Why does the Trump administration continue to churn this crap out?
Or MAYBE in a country as large and populous as RUSSIA, they have a very large pool of talented players.
Occam’s Razor.
I am pretty sure Japan and South Korea had all Japanese and Koreans on their teams as well. And how about Nigeria or Senegal?
Of the 8 countries still in the running, 4 have large populations, over 50 million: Brazil, Russia, France, and England, whereas 4 have under 12 million: Belgium, Sweden, Croatia, and Uruguay. Uruguay has the least at about 3.3 million people.
The player who scored Denmark’s only goal in the match against Croatia (not counting the penalty kicks at the end) was Mathias Joergensen, who is half-African (mother from Gambia).
Nigeria was all black, why no concern over the diversity of the Nigerian team? Same with Iran and many other teams. Or is it only Europeans that need to reflect diversity?

“Diversity”, along with “racist” and “awesome” are on my list of most despised words.
When you have nothing to add to a conversation, just say the whole topic is racist due to lack of diversity. When someone else agrees, lean back in your chair and rather loudly proclaim, “AWESOME!” Any liberals within earshot will think you’re a genius. Works every time.
So what? Japanese, S. Korean, Nigerian, and Senegalese teams also appeared homogeneous. Didn’t see a single white player on any of these teams. Also, Russia’s annual May 9th Den Pobeda parades are almost exclusively Russian, except for some Asians. So what?
Buahahahahahaha. Good point!
The joke is that France might be the first African team to win the World Cup.
They could have made the exact same point about Croatia, although Bosnians and Serbs also live in Croatia.
