To: Hostage
I understand the principle and supposed purpose of oath. I just see it as hollow and self-serving tripe when somebody says "I took an oath to ...", and I reject a conclusion that the oath has a net positive effect.

Reminds me of the press telling us how it is the guardian of truth and protector of the people. Great principle. Not so hot in practice.

Somehow "I'm from the government and I took and oath" doesn't give me any comfort whatsoever.

All members of the military take an oath. It is done for a reason. It may seem hollow but it has a purpose. It allows for firing squads upon conviction of desertion or treason. Without the oath, such acts are not punishable by death.

I agree how hollow and disgusting can be the liar media’s self-exaltation as bastions of a free press.

But I would not compare that to the Oaths taken by those pledging their lives to the service of our country.

That must be because the left side of the aisle has no moral convictions other than winning and gaining more power, so an oath from a democrat or an atheist is worse than useless — except for the liability.
