God, that it is the saddest thing, ever.

It breaks my heart that you love dogs so, yet have none.

Have you considered adopting an elderly dog?

They have a very hard time finding homes because everyone wants young, active cute dogs, not old couch potatoes who just like a meal and soft blanket.

:(

One of my best friends has a pit bull, all-over black, who has loved me to come and see him. She's over ten years old, maybe fourteen. She knows I always treat her with kindess and respect, and always tries to get as close and nuzzle me as she can. When I want her to leave me alone, I just have to get a few feet beyond her (heavy-duty, well-anchored) chain. My friend is a Marine veteran, and has trained her well to live in his auto shop and protect his interests there.

Would I ever completely trust her? No. But I would hate to see what would happen to anyone who ever threatened him or his children. As to his wife? I dunno, but I don't think the dog would have to worry about what happens to anyone intending to hurt her.
