It’s the love of money. The lusting after wealth, instead of loving God and putting Him first, that is the root of evil. Money and wealth are not sinful in the aggregate. But idolatry is a horrible sin, with horrible consequences.
I would say that putting money above faith, family, and friends is a problem.
However, a person can be true to faith, family, and friends and also recognize that either good people control the wealth or bad people control the wealth.
There is no virtue in good people ceding the wealth to bad people.
