All high achievers usually are honored with magna cum laude or whatever. Not recognizing valedictorians and salutatorians mess them out of scholarships and free rides at state universities.

There should be a Valedictorian and high honors/honors. I have no problem recognizing people who did well but just fell short of the #1 spot. You don't have to get rid of the Valedictorian to do that.
