It is the last civilized mode of travel available to the American public.
But they only promise that you will leave the originating station on time. After that it’s a crap shoot.
Food, very good
Get a sleeper and the service is excellent.
Go First Class and you’ll never travel any other way again.

I take one every year or so cross-country. Always go first class with my own room.
25 years ago it was very nice in those cars with food and drink available pretty much 24/7 and a conductor (or 2) at your call. Now, the cars are dilapidated, you’re lucky if there’s a pot of bad coffee, and you can wait a half hour if you need help with something.
I still love traveling by train and it’s not a huge inconvenience but it used to be something very special.
