I knew a man who was brilliant at math and algebra. He could figure things in his head almost instantly.
Then he got a company calculator.
After about ten years using a calculator he was no longer “sharp” in his math skills.
But for an old dummy like me, a hand held calculator was a Godsend.
I have no problem with calculators. And certainly a calculator does not qualify as AI.
On the flip side, I think we assume that all technology is benign and useful. Much of it is, but there is a cost. We don’t always realize that cost.
Your calculator analogy also applies to spelling.
I used to be a great speller. Over time, I’ve leaned on autocorrect so much that sometimes it can’t even make a suggestion.
