What does the [kill-box] mean?

1-death as in killed
2-taken out (no in control anymore)
3-out of commission

I’ve been confused by the kill boxes, thinking only death.
OR is the answer yes to all the above and things I haven’t thought about?

I don't think it literally means "kill", though it might in some rare cases. I think your other two are right on, and maybe more than anything, just means whatever is inside the brackets is receiving or going to receive "special attention" and focus.

Just my guess.
