Anyone on board have clue what city the waves are about to obliterate? And why was it cut off in Bill and Kim's excellent adventure?

It is Columnar Jointing. Geologic, usually igneous. See Devil's Tower, Wyoming or Devil's Postpile, California for examples in the US. Usually resistant to weathering, an Ocean could very easily reveal it by hydraulic erosion of the less resistant material encapsulating it.

Anyone on board have clue what city the waves are about to obliterate? It's not a city, it is a basaltic column formation. Basalt columns form in hex shapes, which you can see if you look.
