pit bulls are particularly dangerous but even the every day dog can snap in an instant...

Agreed, we have a 90 pound bundle of love that's a Shepherd/Rott mix. She's been with us 3 years, and my son found her as a stray.

Biggest dog I've ever had, and I get a bit wary when we play rough. Smart dog, too...she hangs around me most of the time, as I'm the one that feeds her and takes her for walks. lol

She plays well with my 7YO grandson, who's used to being around larger dogs. I just have to be careful not to let it get out of hand. And I'd NEVER let her near an infant/toddler.

Woman files $2 million lawsuit against Wisconsin police department after dog attack

GLENDALE, Wisconsin -- A woman filed a civil lawsuit against four members of the Glendale Police Department. The suit filed in federal court is demanding $2 million.

She claims the investigation into a dog attack that took place in March 2017 was not handled properly.

The suit claims the woman was attacked by a 3-year-old Presa Canario
and suffered injuries to her head, back and wrist that required more than 140 medical treatments,
including 11 staples in her scalp, puncture wounds on her back and an injured wrist, which needed three surgeries to fix.

A police report from the incident claims that her hand was "completely covered in blood and her hair appeared to be blood soaked."

The woman also claimed the attack resulted in emotional trauma.

The dog qas temporarily quarantined for 10 days. The woman also claims that police were not aware of procedure for dog attacks.

The woman no charges were filed in the incident, and when she called repeatedly for an update in the investigation,
a sergeant told her that "f you don't like the way we handle this get yourself an attorney and sue us."

Both the Glendale police chief and the city's attorney declined to comment, citing pending litigation.

Glendale City Attorney John Fuchs issued the following statement.

"She went into the dog's yard and approached the dog. Most of these processes pertain to dogs at large,
not to people who enter upon the premises of another and engage the dog."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Need more info.
She went into the dog's yard. Was she familiar to the dog? Was the dog male or female? Intact? Tied up? Anyone else present in the yard?
I'll attempt to research and find additional info...unless one of the other posters on this thread would care to do it instead?
Thanks. She's drawn blood with me a few times while we're playing. Nothing serious, of course, mostly a nip on the arm, but I know what dogs are capable of.
I taught her to growl fiercely when we're playing tug of war, though visitors haven't seen the humor...lol. Five minutes of that is pretty good exercise.
BTW, congrats on your sobriety. My diabetes medication has pretty much ended my drinking days, though I will enjoy an occasional adult beverage, i.e. a glass of wine or a beer.
Good post jpsb. Informative, fair and balanced
All the breeders I know are very responsible.
They breed for good stable Temperament and Confirmation.
They screen all potential buyer and have contracts with takeback clauses if there is any indication of irresponsibility.
They educate all buyers on the principles of responsible dog ownership and warn of potential problems and how to avoid them.
I illustrated some of the points in this post and how they related to my breeders and my dog.
Some trace the start of popularity among the thug culture
and irresponsible dog owners with this Sports Illustrated cover.
I know of Presa Canarios but having never met one I can’t say I’m familiar with them. How about you?
Three children injured in feral dog attacks in UP’s Sitapur
The dog menace returned to haunt Sitapur district after a short breather on Tuesday, when feral canines mauled two children and a teenager in Rausa area.
Fortunately, nobody was killed in the attacks.
Sitapur divisional forest officer Anirudh Pandey confirmed the attacks.
“As per information received, three minors – identified as Kajal (8), Shakib Ali (6) and Mehtab Khan (15) – were injured in separate attacks by feral dogs.
They prima facie appear to be canine attacks,” he said.
The injured were rushed to the primary health centre immediately after the attacks, and later released after administration of first aid.
At least 14 children have died due to dog attacks in Sitapur so far this year, with eight of the fatalities occurring in May.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath also took stock of the situation.
The district administration has asked the officials concerned to look into the fresh attacks and take adequate measures to stop them.
Incidentally, a leopard had injured six people in Rausa last Friday. Wildlife officials are trying to capture the animal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Most of the dog bite fatalities occurring in my neck of the woods are caused by packs of Husky/sled type dogs.
They are lost or abandoned and form roaming feral packs.

Dog removed from Hampton home after attacking human, killing dog

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- A neighborhood in Hampton said they have been living in fear. A dog in the neighborhood is responsible for attacking three pets and killing one of them.
Community members said they called Hampton Animal Control, but nothing was done until Tuesday when they came and picked the dog up.
Several calls had to be made to the city manager and city council. “This should have never happened, my dog had a lot of life left in him,” said Joe Stillwell, who lives on Alcove Drive.

Stillwell was walking his Jack Russel Terroir, T-Bone, past his neighbor’s house on Saturday. That's when the pit bull broke through its backyard fence. According to Stillwell, T-Bone didn’t stand a chance.

“It was as vicious and as heinous as anything you could possibly imagine. He basically ripped my dog in half, crushed his lungs, punctured his skull,” said Stillwell.
“I punched the dog. My hands are still swollen. I kicked the dog. I couldn’t get the dog to release.”

T-Bone’s injuries were so severe he had to be put to sleep.

Neighbor Richard York said it was the second time the dog broke through the fence. The first time was in February when York’s wife, and his two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, were attacked in their own backyard.

“As my wife was carrying the second dog into the house, the pit bull turned on her. Bit her on her left leg, knocked her to the ground,” said York.

Neighbors said Hampton Animal Control was called again, and again, but nothing was done.

“It’s very disappointing, sad, and disconcerting that T-Bone had to die before anything was taken seriously,” said York.

Neighbors said even this latest attack took three days before anything took place.

“I don’t feel that they are protecting us as citizens very well. If they can ignore something like this,” said neighbor Patty Johnson.

The owner of the pit bull, who has four young children, reluctantly turned the dog over to animal control.

“Kids are in the car crying right now because their favorite dog is being taken away because what happened to be a freak accident,” said Jessica Person.

Person said she never saw her dog as a threat to the neighborhood.

“Everybody else saw her as a threat but me, my kids, and anybody who came to the house, saw her as like the most loving person,” said Person.

Hampton Animal Control declined to speak to 13NewsNow. The fate of the dog will be decided in court.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Principles of Responsible Dog Ownership...
CONTAIN, Control, Maintain, Train and Socialize.
These folks failed to CONTAIN their dog.
No, Jessica, it wasn't a "freak accident". It was the direct result of you failing to properly contain your dog.
I feel somewhat sorry for you and your kids, but you are the author of your own misfortune.
Even after the first instance, you failed to ensure it wouldn't happen again.
Fencing is a good way to contain your dog but it must be tailored to be adequate for the particular dog. In this case it obviously wasn't.
Rigorous and effective Animal Control response is a necessity.
Too often a lackadaisical response by Animal Control results in being called back later to deal with a tragedy
Dog ripped from owner's arms and killed
SHARON Barber is scarred for life after her beloved dog Panda was savagely mauled at her feet during their morning walk.
The 15-year-old Maltese cross died in her arms having been torn apart by an off-leash dog.
Ms Barber told the Chronicle she was walking Panda on Bryant St, Maryborough, when a husky appeared and ran at them.
"I picked Panda up, spun around and said 'no' to the dog but it jumped up and grabbed her," Ms Barber said.
"It grabbed her and it started chewing at her neck at my feet while I was screaming."
An off-leash dog is a dog not under Control.
We were on the roof of my apartment complex enjoying post-prandial cigars and witnessed a straight-from-Portlandia type female single parent with two dogs and a five year old on a bicycle.
One dog on the leash, the other off. The bigger one, of course. That dog attacked another dog from someone in my complex, darting across the street to do it.
She couldn’t watch the kid and break up the dogs, plus control the little one, which got away from her and attacked the other dog. Luckily, the owner of the dog who was attacked was with a significant other. He managed to wrangle the bigger dog away and hold it.
Mother of the year then had her TWO dogs delivered back to her by the assaulted couple, while the wee tot was doing lazy circles in the street.
I’m so happy that women are in charge now, and that the culture of nuclear, two-parent families will be behind us forever.
Ever notice that animals have displaced children in terms of social and legal protection? Not an accident considering the master gender discovered you can’t be a captain of industry and raise well-adjusted children.
Your lack of common decency and lack of any sign of compassion for the child who’s last moments of life where in the jaws of one of these murderous beast is telling your frequent use of names in your replies tells much to one who listens and reads about your thought processes. your refusal to answer straight questions puts a lie to you claims of expertise. There is clearly something wrong and unstable about a person that holds animal life above that of a human. That said you will get no more from me as I now look on you as I would any animal incapable of ration, logical, and reason Capable only of reactions based on emotion and instinct. And I will now regard your post as having the weight of the howls of beasts.
