Toward the end of his life, Richard Matheson was still writing but had really lost his spark. He wrote a book called Hunted Beyond Reason that was a semi-ripoff of Deliverance. A complete wuss lefty Democrat was out in the woods with his wife’s far right conservative Republican ex-husband. The righty ends up raping the wuss in incredible detail from Matheson, right down to a description of fluids. Really sick stuff. Never read the book version of Deliverance, but I doubt if it was as graphic. I threw the Matheson book out.
