after Secretariat passed away at a relatively young age for a horse a veterinarian was brought in to conduct a autopsy, and although he did not weigh the heart officially he estimated that Secretariat’s heart weight over 20 lb. That’s substantial and the reason Secretariat just kept gaining speed in many of her races was due to the fact that the amount of blood that was being oxygenated and pumped through her body into her musculature was incredible. In other words she didn’t Tire easily and just kept on going.

I think Secretariat was a male. But his offspring didn’t inherit the same heart size apparently. Must not have been a genetic thing.
He died at 19, not too awfully young. My favorite race to watch of his was the Beltmont, where he didn’t use his usual method of holding back until the final stretch, he leaped out of the gate and never stopped.

Not sure if I posted this before but I knew a woman in Ga whose sister lived in Florida. There was an animal abuse case where abandoned horses were found by a Fedex or UPS man - he noticed over a week or so that many horses were getting thinner and coming closer to the front of the fenced in pasture in search of food so he called animal control and found the owner just up and left all these horses with no food or water. After they were taken in and vetted, the many horses were put up for adoption.
The woman’s sister adopted one and at one ooint noticed the mare had a tattoo on the inside of her lower lip. After having the horse for several months, she and her husband decided to try to find out more about their new horse by researching the number tattoo.
Turns out the horse is one of Secretariat’s granddaughters.
To the best of my knowledge, Secretariat was a HE, not a SHE.
Sham’s heart was also huge. If he had not been born in the same year as the spectacular Secretariat, Sham would have gone down in history as a suoer horse instead of an also ran.
