It is Laurel...at least on the one I heard. If someone is hearing Yannie on that one then they should get checked out.
Apparently the original recording was “Laurel”. Then someone filtered it to remove some of the bass components. Based on our hearing sensitivity, some of us hear “Yanny”.
My wife hears “Laurel” and I hear “Yanny”.

You can vary the filter so that everyone hears “Laurel” or everyone hears “Yanny”. You can even find a spot for most individuals where they hear a mix of the two words.
The speed-up or slow-down effect you describe is pretty much the same thing, since speeding up means shifting to higher frequencies.
So now there two things that the NYT is good for: real-time election night results, and disntinguishing Laurel vs. Yanny.
The original recording tracked to vocabularydotcom says Laurel. This video clip was helpful as you can see people hear yanny moreso when he highlights the higher tones on the audio file.
Interesting, really makes you wonder how many other words can be so easily misunderstood.

It’s not the device. I heard laurel the first time on tv. Saved it on DVR. Later I played it for my daughter. Same tv, this time I heard yanny! Today I replayed it, I heard laurel again. same tv, same dvr clip

Laurel. Can’t hear any type of ee sound at the end for Yanny. I suspect its based on age as well as the device. Young people might hear the higher frequencies better so maybe they will hear Yanny?
I heard Laurel, but maybe that’s because I am so used to saying and hearing it. lol It’s my dog’s name.
